How to Style Your Moroccan Rug

How to Style Your Moroccan Rug

There are many reasons why you may not want to keep your Moroccan rug solely on your floor, such as protecting it from the joyous turmoil of regular family life. They're also beautiful, vivid pieces of decor that need to be displayed at eye level. "Historically, Moroccan rugs have been used for much more than floor coverings," explains the founder of Bab Rugs.

"Berber Rugs have been used for many purposes, including adornment, bedding, displays of wealth and prestige, modular walls for nomadic people, upholstery, prayer, storytelling, art, and so on."

Rugs are extremely adaptable, ranging from vintage to modern. Shags, Turkish Tulus, and Moroccan rugs are ideal for draping over furniture to add contrast. Throwing a vibrant kilim or flat weave behind a sofa or in an entryway is a fantastic way to bring color and flair to any area. There is good news when it comes to hanging a rug on a wall: "Pretty much any Moroccan rug works well on the wall, but flatweaves (flat tapestry weaves) are the most popular." When utilizing Kilim rugs in areas other than the floor, bear in mind that they should never be directly above or too close to a heat source, such as a radiator or a fireplace.

Aside from that, the only limit to Berber rugs is your imagination. So we spoke with our interior designer, who is known for her imaginative rug arrangements. She experimented with unique textile technologies to create rugs and other soft items.

Hi! Where is the strangest rug you've ever seen styled right out of the gate?

I've seen some clever individuals upholster their car interiors with rugs.

That's great fun. We will absolutely remember that suggestion. So, why would someone hang a Moroccan rug somewhere else than the floor?

At its most basic, rugs add texture and warmth to a room. More specifically, Moroccan rugs are an excellent way to incorporate color and layers into a room. Displaying a rug off the floor is an excellent method to preserve its beauty and the skill that goes into it. In our office, we have a large accent wall with a 6'x9' Moroccan rug hanging on it. I guarantee that it will always spark a conversation. Putting your rug at eye level reduces wear and tear on those expensive pieces.

Is there anything to consider when considering whether a rug should be put on a wall, such as size?

There are no guidelines for hanging a Moroccan rug on the wall—it doesn't even have to fit nicely! It has the potential to pour over the edges and onto the floor. Larger Moroccan rugs generally look better in terms of proportion. I also believe that the bolder the rug, the better. It gives the space a softness and texture that only textiles can provide. Rugs can be used as focal points or embellishments, just like a painting or a throw blanket.

What are the best ways to hang a rug as wall art?

Always evaluate and measure your rug's total size and weight before purchasing any hanging tools. Also, avoid doing a lopsided job: uneven weight distribution when hanging can cause a hefty rug to warp or even rip.

For smaller or lighter-weight rugs, you can hang them using velcro (several museums use this method), which is both efficient and economical.

For larger and heavier rugs, you may want to consider hanging them with carpet tacks, which might include screws and an anchor for further security. You will require carpet tacks, upholstery nails, a screw, and an anchor. Measure the carpet tack strips to match the width of the rug. Next, put the rug on the strip and hammer the nails into the wall. To be safe, you can attach this strip with an anchor and a screw.

There are several methods for hanging rugs, but please use caution and consult an expert; we don't want anything to break.
